PULIH MARI BALI WUTUH PURNA WALUYA JATI Benutzung eines Metate (mexikanische Handmühle) Use of a Mexican metate Gandhik and Pipisan stone herb grinder In Java, the gandhik is the cylindrical stone used to crush medicinal herbs on the pipisan, which is the flat stone. In the preparations of traditional Javanese herbal remedies called jamu, the gandhik and pipisan were used alongside the lumpang-alu mortar and pestle. For preparing herbs for cooking, a different shape of stone mortar and pestle was used, called the cowek-munthu. Recently researchers have linked the gandhik-pipisan to the South American maize grinder and the Chinese armada of Zheng He of the 15'th century Ming dynasty. Wrecks of part of the armada near Indonesian waters have revealed these same tools which had apparently been transported from South America. Other evidence also points to contact between Chinese sailors and South American culture, for instance the spread of maize in South East Asia before the arrival of the white man, and the Chinese name adopted for it in Java : jagung. Zheng He is venerated on the North Coast Of Java by the name of Dampo Awang. In traditional Java, not many people would own and use a gandhik and pipisan, as these tools were usually used by the wealthy and knowledgeable. Finding a complete set of gandhik and pipisan like this is very rare indeed. This particular pipisan is worked on more than the average pipisan would be, and on the underside you can see the mark of the mason who gracefully fashioned this tool of mediaeval science. The gandhik rolls perfectly in the groove created by years of use on this very same pipisan. South American Metate Stone For Grinding Corn Metate(mealing stone) A metate (or mealing stone) is a mortar, a ground stone tool used for processing grain and seeds. In traditional Mesoamerican culture, metates were typically used by women who would grind calcified maize and other organic materials during food preparation (e.g., making tortillas). Similar artifacts are found all over the world, including China. gandik
