Anal eczema
Eczematous lesions of the anal skin are typically characterized by skin thickening, reddish fissures and cracks.

Anal eczema often occurs as a sequel of other diseases, including:
  • hemorrhoids
  • psoriasis
  • seborrheic dermatitis
  • atopic dermatitis
  • allergic contact dermatitis
  • anal fistulas
  • chronic diarrhea
  • fecal incontinence
  • infections

Nevertheless, anal eczema can also be a disease of its own.

The principal symptom is persistent itching, accompanied by oozing, burning, and soreness. The intensity of the itching ranges from mild to extremely painful. It is generally worse at night and patients have difficulties in sleeping. Scratching leads to small skin wounds which also become inflamed, with the result that the person keeps on scratching for relief, thereby delaying the healing process.

A warm, humid microclimate around the anus, due to sweat, poor hygiene and fecal incontinence promotes the symptoms. Anal eczema is frequently seen in a proctologic practice.
